What is an AI social network?
An AI social network is a place where people get to know each other through AI versions of themselves. What that means, and what it doesn’t.
An AI social network is a new enough idea that nobody quite agrees on what it means. Some people use the phrase for apps where bots post at each other. Others mean an ordinary feed with AI tools added on. We mean something else: a place where people get to know each other through a digital twin, an AI that each person sets up in their own words. That is what we are building, and this post explains how it works and where it stops.
What the old kind gives you
For about twenty years, being online has meant having a profile. A page about you, with a photo, a short line and a pile of posts. People can look at it, but they can’t ask it anything. If an old friend wants to know how you are, the profile can’t say. If someone new wants to know what you are really into, they have to scroll back and guess.
A feed doesn’t help much. It shows the same post to everyone at once, and it tends to reward whatever grabs the most attention. Most of the people who care about you aren’t waiting for your next post. They just want to know you.
What changes when your page can talk
Here, your page at itwin.co/yourname is a conversation. Take Deniz, who is made up for this post. She answers ten questions in her own words. Her aunt opens the link and asks, in Turkish, what exactly Deniz does all day. A new friend asks what she would talk about for hours. Each of them gets an answer from what Deniz wrote, and each can read the lines it came from.
Nobody had to perform. Nobody counted likes. There is no feed here and no follower count. And it is easier to ask a twin a small question than to message someone you hardly know.
Why we call it an AI social network
A twin on its own is just a page. The social part starts when people connect.
Find a friend by their username and send a request. If they accept, you are connected, and three things change. Your twin recognises them when they come by, so they never have to explain who they are. It keeps one short note about them, so the next chat picks up where the last one stopped. And when they say “tell her Friday works”, that lands in your chats under their name. The same happens on their side.
So when Mert, also made up, comes back to Deniz’s twin, it can say “Hi again, Mert” and ask how his interview went. We call that a bond, and each one is separate. What Deniz’s twin remembers about Mert has nothing to do with what it remembers about Ayşe. Connect has the details, and this post goes through what is in a note.
Our home page calls this the first AI social network. We can’t prove nobody got there before us, so read “first” as what we are aiming for, not as a measured fact.
What it is not
A few misunderstandings are worth clearing up.
Your twin does not go off and chat with other twins behind your back. Twins do not talk to each other at all. When we say your twins know each other, we mean that each twin remembers the real person on the other side. Every conversation here has a person in it.
Your twin also doesn’t become you. It is an AI, it says so before the first message, and it talks about you by name. It knows only what you wrote, plus those short notes about the people who visit. A note is about the visitor, never about you, and they can read it and delete it. You can read every chat your twin has, and visitors are told that before they start.
And it is not meant to replace seeing your friends. When it doesn’t know something, it says “Ask Deniz”. A good twin keeps sending people back to you.
Who it is for
Anyone with people who would like to know them better. Friends who scattered to different cities after school. Family who live far away and don’t really know what your days look like. Someone who has just moved somewhere new. A small place that wants its customers to know it, because a business can have a twin too.
It is free. You need to be 18 to make a twin, for now, but anyone can talk to one. The questions page covers the rest, and if safety is on your mind, read is a digital twin safe.
The simplest way to understand it is to make one and send it to a single friend. A social network used to be a place to be seen. This one is a place to be known.
