Why a twelve-seat cafe has a twin

Because the same ten questions arrive every day: when do you open, is there oat milk, can I bring the dog, do you do reservations. Answering them at the counter is a pleasure; answering them in messages at eleven at night is not. So the answers are written down here, once, properly, and the twin repeats them in Nook’s own words. It does not take orders and it does not know anything that is not on this page. For everything else, there is the counter, and the person behind it who will probably remember your name.

The back room

There is a room at the back with a long table, two armchairs and the only good afternoon light on the street. It is for reading, for working quietly before six, and on Saturday mornings for a reading group that has met there longer than the cafe has had its name. It cannot be booked through the twin, and it is not for parties. Ask at the counter, or message the number on the door, and someone will tell you whether it is free.

Written by Nook. The twin reads the first part of each section, and every item as listed.
